Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

37 – St Mirren beat Dundee 3-1 at Dens Park in the cinch Premiership to take a huge step towards securing a place in Europe. Goals from Alex Gogic, Scott Tanser and Toyosi Olusanya helped Stephen Robinson’s side move five points clear of their opponents in the table with just three matches remaining. Saints have now won five of their last six league matches against Dundee, and also knocked them out of last season’s Scottish Cup on penalties. St Mirren have not played in Europe for 37 years – their last campaign came in the 1987/88 Cup Winners’ Cup, when they defeated Norwegian side Tromso before losing in the last 16 to Belgian side Mechelen, who went on to win the trophy.

2 – Ross County jumped out of the relegation zone in the cinch Premiership thanks to a 2-1 victory over Hibernian at the Global Energy Stadium. Hibs took an early lead, but Simon Murray quickly levelled things up before Jordan White’s 88th-minute winner handed Don Cowie’s side all three points. Murray has scored 12 league goals for County this season – the league’s top scorer Lawrence Shankland is the only other Scottish player to hit double figures. The victory takes County two points ahead of St Johnstone with three matches to play – the sides meet in Perth in the penultimate match of the season. The Staggies have earned 16 points from their last 10 league matches, having taken just two from the 10 before that.

17 – Queen’s Park defeated Airdrieonians 2-0 at Hampden on Friday to retain their cinch Championship status. Goals from Ruari Paton and Liam McLeish made sure Callum Davidson’s side kept their heads above water in eighth place in the division, a point ahead of Inverness Caledonian Thistle. The Spiders took 27 points from their 17 matches after Davidson took over from Robin Veldman in January – they kept eight clean sheets in those games, having previously only kept three. Paton finished the season with 17 league goals in his first season with Queen’s Park – only Brian Graham and Louis Moult scored more in the Championship.

0 – Falkirk completed an unbeaten season in cinch League 1 after coming from behind to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw at home to Alloa Athletic. Ex-Bairn Conor Sammon handed the Wasps a 2-0 lead, but Aidan Nesbitt pulled one back on the stroke of half-time before Brad Spencer delighted a packed Falkirk Stadium with a late equaliser from the spot. John McGlynn’s side won 27 and drew nine of their 36 league matches, giving them a club record tally of 90 points. The Bairns have become just the seventh side to complete an unbeaten season in the Scottish League – Celtic did it in the top flight in 1897/98 and 2016/17, Rangers achieved it in the top flight in 1898/99 and 2020/21 as well as in the third tier in 2013/14, and Kilmarnock did so in the second tier in 1898/99.

3 – Clyde defeated Elgin City 3-0 at Borough Briggs to ensure they stayed in cinch League 2 for another season. Two goals from Liam Scullion and one from Martin Rennie ensured that Ian McCall’s side finished two points clear of bottom club Stranraer, who will now face East Kilbride in a two-legged play-off. Rennie finished the season as Clyde’s top league goalscorer with 12, matching the highest tally of his career – he also scored 12 times for Montrose in 2018/19. The Bully Wee won three of their four matches against Elgin this season – they gained more points against the Black and Whites than against any other side.
